Placemake Arts Northwest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to secure Washington State Creative District certification for communities in Whatcom County. We believe arts and culture are powerful engines for economic development, community identity, and quality of life.

Our Creative Districts

We are building two Creative Districts in Whatcom County, each with its own unique character and creative economy.

Ferndale

A thriving small-city arts scene with murals, galleries, breweries, and a growing creative economy. Ferndale is pursuing state Creative District certification to unlock funding, signage, and regional marketing support.

Blaine

A border town with untapped creative potential. Blaine’s unique location and character make it a natural candidate for Creative District development, connecting arts with tourism and cross-border culture.

Why Creative Districts?

State certification means highway signage, up to $50,000 in capital funding, regional marketing support, and enhanced tourism infrastructure. Creative Districts drive economic development while preserving community identity.
